For Prospective Master’s Students
- Rather than allowing each student to pursue an entirely independent topic, the Matsui Lab generally adopts a collaborative research model in which each student takes responsibility for part of a broader lab project. Students’ own interests and preferences are taken into account, and research topics are determined through discussion so that each student can work on a topic they find meaningful.
- I consider this to be one of the most academically demanding labs in the Graduate School of Economics. Please apply only if you are prepared to commit seriously to your research.
- From the first year of the master’s program, students are expected to participate in a weekly seminar and give presentations or complete assigned work on a regular basis. Our goal is to develop researchers who graduate with the knowledge, skills, and professional mindset expected of a master’s degree holder.
- As a lab led by a former consultant, students are expected to acquire not only knowledge of economics, psychology, and statistics, but also practical skills in project management, logical thinking, and presentation by the time they complete the program.
- Students are encouraged to obtain a qualification equivalent to the Japan Statistical Society Certificate, Grade 2 during their enrollment. No particular level of statistical knowledge is required at the time of admission; however, students with limited background in statistics are expected to study intensively during the first year. Developing sufficient statistical competence is considered an important requirement for progressing to the second year.
- As a general policy, students are not expected to complete the master’s program unless they produce a research paper or conference presentation based on their master’s thesis during their enrollment. Students should commit fully to their research, build a record of achievement they can be proud of, and complete the program with confidence.
For Prospective Doctoral Students
- I welcome applicants to the doctoral program, as well as master’s students who are considering continuing on to a Ph.D.
- At the same time, I would like to discuss frankly whether joining the Matsui Lab is the best fit for your academic goals and career plans.
- For this reason, prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact me for an informal consultation before applying.
