Course: Introduction to Consulting — Understanding and Revitalizing Local Economies through Empathy

2026 course syllabus : click here

This course gives students the opportunities to work on real-world challenges provided by companies and organizations. Under the guidance of Professor Michinori Uesugi, who has extensive experience in community-based economic initiatives, I also participate in the course, drawing on my previous experience as a consultant.

Students work directly with participating companies and organizations to conduct research, develop proposals, and present their findings, gaining practical business experience while deepening their understanding of local economies. The course is co-taught with Professor Uesugi.

Although the course is titled Introduction to Consulting, it is designed to teach broadly applicable consulting and problem-solving skills and is not limited to students interested in pursuing careers in consulting.

Course Structure

A distinctive feature of this course is that students work on real-world challenges provided by actual companies and organizations and present the results of their research and analysis directly to representatives of those organizations.

1. Selection and Enrollment

Eligibility: Third- and fourth-year undergraduate students from all schools and faculties, as well as graduate students.
Students may be selected depending on the projects available.

2. Orientation and Team Formation

Students learn about the objectives of the course and the fundamentals of consulting. They then indicate their project preferences and are assigned to teams.

3. Research and Analysis (including interviews with companies)

Students analyze the assigned challenges through market research, surveys, interviews, and other methods. When appropriate, they visit participating companies and organizations and speak directly with their representatives to gain a deeper understanding of their business challenges.

4. Midterm Review

Students receive feedback from the instructors and external project supporters to refine the direction of their proposals.

5. Proposal Development

Based on their analysis, students develop proposals and prepare presentation materials for the partner companies and organizations.

6. Final Presentation

Students present their final proposals directly to the participating companies and organizations.

Information about the course and its activities will be shared through the School of Economics website and social media channels, including X.

A dedicated website for this course is also currently under development.

Student Feedback

“I believe this course offers students a truly unique opportunity to engage directly with real-world business challenges. Although it can be demanding, you can learn a great deal in a short period of time, and the experience will undoubtedly be a valuable asset for your future.”

“Of all the courses I took during my four years at the School of Economics, this was one of the most memorable. You experience firsthand both the challenge and the excitement of applying logical thinking and frameworks learned from textbooks to real-world problems. It is not an easy course, but that is precisely what makes the experience so intensive and unforgettable. I strongly encourage you to take on the challenge.”

“This course is certainly valuable for students interested in consulting, but I also believe it helps students develop broadly applicable skills that will be essential in their future careers, regardless of the field they choose.”

In addition, 75% of students reported that the course substantially deepened their understanding of the current state and challenges of local economies.* In this sense, the course also aligns with Osaka University’s vision of being “locally rooted and globally engaged.”

*Among the 16 students who completed the course in 2026, 12 responded that their understanding had “deepened substantially” or “deepened very substantially,” while 4 responded that it had “deepened to some extent.”

Course: Specialized Seminar — Reading Research Papers in Behavioral Science

(Second-Year Seminar)

2026 Course Syllabus: Click here

The goal of this second-year seminar is to help students develop the ability to independently search for and evaluate scientific evidence, such as academic research papers, in response to questions they encounter.

Students select one topic either from a list provided by the instructor or based on their own interests. With support from the instructor and teaching assistants (TAs), they independently read academic papers and related books and summarize the findings of their research.

Course: Research and Fieldwork Internship

Through these activities, students gain practical business experience and a deeper understanding of professional working environments. This course is offered exclusively to graduate students.
